THE COLOURS OF CHAGALL'S LOVE

The colours of Chagall's grave flying love
have dissolved in the sky of my dreams.
We are listening to the "ku-ka-ri-ku"
of the red rooster, looking out at flowers.
We are flying over the roofs
of houses in Paris or Vitebsk,
sucking the milk of the red cow of dawn.
We are being crucified
at the crossroads of the rushnik,
and we die in the colours of revolution and lament.
And again we are flying up, now
over broken churches,
over houses with green eyes
that smell of the eternal milk of life, death, and love,
the sky under us dividing
into stained-glass colours,
the snow clock hovering in the night
with one blue wing.
Red angels are calling us,
red mares are carrying beloveds on their backs,
red apples are tumbling to our knees.
The moon is doubling, trembling in water
with fishes and mermaids it is going to marry,
and a bluebird is singing to an eternal violin.

THOUGHTS ARE TANGLED

Thoughts are tangled in my hair,
and when the wind of your hands
touches my head
every thought becomes a bird.
I write poems in the night;
when you take away your hand,
the lines on your palms
become flocks of sounds
and fly to a warm land
where someone will hear them
and write them down
and make them his own.
But my flocks have already flown past;
I can never remember them in the dawn --
only the tangled hair
that my comb can't straighten
and the white sheet of paper.

BLUE HERON

The night turns blue --
into the starfishes of your eyes in front of me.
I stand as a blue heron, motionless,
peering along salt water:

stars have looked at me,
crawled onto pearl and coral necklaces,
and ascended to the sky,
leaving the two wandering silver fishes of your pupils
to stand against a stream.

The stream water reaches one knee,
the salt water reaches another,
the cold water reaches the ribs,
the transparent water reaches the breast.
I'll be drowned in myself
if the water doesn't burst through my eyes.

I have no way to read your thoughts
because the words and letters leap around
as silver fishes, as if I were dislexic.
I catch only the sounds of their movements.

I am frozen in the balance
between you and myself.
Is it possible to hold on
on one leg?

The water
like the glass in a telescope, fingerprints of observers on it,
approaches me at the bottom
but doesn't clear things;
I am unbelievably small,
the world is unbelievably vast.
The whole world has frozen in my marrow.

I'm losing balance on purpose,
and silver fishes vanish.

I make an effort,
spread the wings
and fly above
you.
In you.

Heron.
Blue heron
in the salt
water.

наближає до дна, та не прояснює речей;

LOVE IS ON THE TIPS

Love is on the tips of the comb
with which I comb my long hair.
Love is on the ends of my hair
that I spread out over you like a sheet.
Love is in the palm of my hand
that forms to your ripening shoot.
Love is on the tips of my fingers
that touch to your navel as if guided there.
Love is in its depth;
I reach love with the tip of my tongue
the way a wild creature reaches
to rainwater between split stones.
Love is on the tip of my tongue.
Love is on the tip...

THE GOLDEN CRANES

In the camomile meadow
there are golden cranes
who, like ripples in the river,
swim, and sink, and swim,
while the blue-eyed stars
gaze into the forest
and it is as if the lonely songs
have come into paradise.

Perhaps a god lives in them,
or in the strange land itself --
it has been so long a time
since they visited this country.
Their wings are gold
and are no longer grey.
For so long a time,
the rain has told their lonely fortunes.

Let us spread out flowers
for the gathering of these birds.
Perhaps they are people
who have left us but now
appear as living cranes, these ones
who have come in pairs
to find their home again.
In the sunlight, their feathers are gold.

Be quiet and still. Listen,
and stay a far way off.
At sunset, watch the sky and earth
dream together. Hold your breath.
Do not be tempted to go nearer
while the cranes speak softly.
In the camomile meadow,
it is the cranes' night.

WHEN DID I AS PERSEPHONE

When did I as Persephone bend over the river
and wash my willow hair
in the flowery green water of the river god of the south?
When did I as Flora grow in the wheat field
and arise as poppies and cornflowers
between the cracked lumps of the rich, black ground?
When did I play hide-and-seek
with Pan, or with Bacchus
become drunk on the viscous wine? --

for in the mornings
I find a crane's feathers
in my damp braids.
