THE GOLDEN CRANES

In the camomile meadow
there are golden cranes
who, like ripples in the river,
swim, and sink, and swim,
while the blue-eyed stars
gaze into the forest
and it is as if the lonely songs
have come into paradise.

Perhaps a god lives in them,
or in the strange land itself --
it has been so long a time
since they visited this country.
Their wings are gold
and are no longer grey.
For so long a time,
the rain has told their lonely fortunes.

Let us spread out flowers
for the gathering of these birds.
Perhaps they are people
who have left us but now
appear as living cranes, these ones
who have come in pairs
to find their home again.
In the sunlight, their feathers are gold.

Be quiet and still. Listen,
and stay a far way off.
At sunset, watch the sky and earth
dream together. Hold your breath.
Do not be tempted to go nearer
while the cranes speak softly.
In the camomile meadow,
it is the cranes' night.
